Poetry Doesn't Have to Be Painful

Take a look at Poetry 180, a Web site geared towards delivering accessible, meaningful, and moving poetry 180 days of the school year. Billly Collins, Ted Kooser, Mary Oliver, and others can help students come to appreciate and enjoy poetry through their imagistic and luminous writing of the everyday. Don't be afraid to pull out the poetry, even if it's not during a pre-planned poetry unit. Experiment with poetry when teaching all genres and encourage students to create their own through Found Poetry!

Found Poems are created from the words and lines of existing poems, prose, or other forms of literature, allowing students to create innovative and original poetry with unique structure and themes. By creating Found Poetry, students focus on elements of syntax, diction, meaning, and literary devices in both the original work and their own creations.
